Using RegEx Filters in Looker Studio: Pattern Matching Made Simple

Jayant Gupta Jayant Gupta April 21, 202612 min read

Regular Expressions let you filter data using patterns rather than exact text — invaluable for cleaning URLs, grouping campaigns and extracting data.

Where to Use RegEx

Chart-level filters (Include/Exclude → Matches Regex), report-level filters, and calculated fields using REGEXP_MATCH, REGEXP_EXTRACT, REGEXP_REPLACE.

Essential Patterns

Any blog page: /blog/.*. PDFs: .*\.pdf$. Campaign variants: brand_(spring|summer|fall)_2026. Extract URL directory: ^/([^/]+)/.

Practical Example

Group landing pages: REGEXP_EXTRACT(Page Path, "^/products/([^/]+)/") extracts product category. Works with data blending to standardize fields.

Troubleshooting

Looker Studio uses RE2 syntax — no lookbehind. Test at regex101.com. For filter issues, check filter troubleshooting. Let us handle it.
