Mastering Date Range Controls in Looker Studio

Jayant Gupta Jayant Gupta April 21, 202612 min read

Date range controls are the most-used interactive feature in dashboards. Getting them right is essential.

Adding Controls

Insert from toolbar (Add a Control → Date Range Control). Set default: "Last 28 days", "Last quarter", "This year". Filters all charts sharing the same data source.

Comparison Periods

Enable "Previous period" or "Previous year" for delta arrows in scorecards. Essential for marketing dashboards.

Chart-Level vs Report-Level

Default affects all charts with the same source. Override per-chart with "Custom" date range for mixed views.

Custom Dates

Use calculated fields: CASE WHEN DATE_DIFF(TODAY(), Date) <= 7 THEN "Last 7 Days" ELSE "Older" END.

Common Issues

Controls not affecting charts? Different data source or mismatched date field name. See date range troubleshooting. Let us build it right.
